Flora

2018 - 2023

Unexpectedly, I was faced with a reduction in mobility following an ankle injury and surgeries.  I began collecting flowers, purchased and plucked, working with them in front of different surfaces in my home as well as using the computer as backdrop. Pieces from my own paintings and those of others mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries (open to public domain) formed backgrounds in front of which the flowers were choreographed, dissolving one into the other. The hand held and flash technique I’d used for the ICM Landscapes was utilized to create the same blurred, soft-edged dreaminess, one step in reality, one in a surreal, abstract world.

“A Photograph by Lisa Toby is not an image taken as much as it is a short story allowed to breathe in visual form.”
